Love him or hate him, he sure hits the nail on the head with this! To anyone with kids of any age, here’s some advice. Bill Gates James Barton recently gave thought about giving a speech at a High School about 11 things they did not and will not learn in school. He talks thought about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept set them up for failure in the real world.
Rule 1: Life is not fair – get used to it!
Rule 2 : The world won’t care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.
Rule 3 : You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won’t be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.
Rule 4 : If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.
Rule 5 : Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your
Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.
Rule 6 : If you mess up, it’s not your parents’ fault, so don’t whine about your mistakes, lea rn from them.
Rule 7 : Before you were born, your parents weren’t as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent’s generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.
Rule 8 : Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they’ll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn’t bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.
Rule 9 : Life is not divided into semesters. You don’t get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.
Rule: 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.
Rule 11 : Be nice to nerds. Chances are you’ll end up working for one.

I absolutely think it should be posted at schools;I also agree with it, if everyone owned up to their own screw-ups and took responsibility for their own actions, and mistakes. The world would be a better place.
I read the majority of this in an old Dear Abby column years ago. I clipped it out and carry it in my wallet. I raised my two children with values and responsibility and tried to make them understand what the article meant. My daughter has since passed away but my son has become a responsible adult and a SSG in the ARMY.If more parents would go back to raising their children instead of worrying about their FEELINGS AND SELF ESTEEM society would better for it.
I absolutely loved, and agree with this list! If we could just get one or two teenagers to learn something from these lessons…
As I am at work, I’m going to print this. I’ll then pin it to the bulletin board, in our break room. Many of us here, have or live with teenagers.
Thanks, James!
This is actually posted at one of the schools I substitute in. The gym teacher has it proudly displayed in her gym.
Ohhh, I’m gonna have fun with this…Thankey Sai!:D

Yes its time for this generation to wake up, You want to watch a “reality show”, its called LIFE!!!
This is not a speech given by Bill Gates. Regardless of how you feel about thee message, I wish people would check their sources before they believe what is on the internet and quote it. Please see: http://www.snopes.com/language/document/liferule.asp
First, debra should relax! Let’s not make such a big deal, over something that’s really not.
Okay, I think it’s wonderful….and all parents, should show to their kids, and ALL schools should post somewhere wher all children, can read it…………..
This is so true. I am going to print and keep this for my daughter and her 2 kids. I will keep a copy for myself also. We as grandparents should keep a copy on hand also.
Thanks so much.
Thanks Debra. I will change it right now.
