At midnight on February 17, 2009, all full-power television stations in the United States will stop broadcasting in analog and switch to 100% digital broadcasting. Digital broadcasting promises to provide a clearer picture and more programming options and will free up airwaves for use by emergency responders.
Congress created the TV Converter Box Coupon Program for households wishing to keep using their analog TV sets after February 17, 2009. The Program allows U.S. households to obtain up to two coupons, each worth $40, that can be applied toward the cost of eligible converter boxes.
A TV connected to cable, satellite or other pay TV service does not require a TV converter box from this program.
Consumers have a variety of options. Options to explore include:
- Keep your existing analog TV and purchase a TV converter box. A converter box plugs into your TV and will keep it working after Feb. 17, 2009, or
- Connect to cable, satellite or other pay service, or
- Purchase a television with a digital tuner.
I received my coupons and already bought two converter boxes. However, get them NOW if you haven’t already as these boxes are almost impossible to find (depending on your area, they are always sold out at my store and we get them almost daily).
I was in awe the first time at the quality received for all my channels. That being said I now receive about 50 channels in perfect quality by still using the same rabbit ears I used with my TV. Can you say awesome??

I record most of what I watch…have 3 VCRs. Got a digital TV (with my winnings on Amazon.com) and planned to get a DVR/VCR with the built in antenna, and 2 converter boxes for the other 2. Bought 1 box (with the $45 coupon and a $25 Best Buy card that I had won), and got the DRR/VCR from Amazon. Got it set up, and couldn’t wait to record on digital…only it would not let me use a VCR with digital. I did not know that (Maybe everybody else does…) So now I will have to purchase 2 more DVR/VCRs and my son will need one too on his TV. So the box is pretty much worthless…will hook it up to my husbands TV that he looks at maybe once a year. I sure wish I had known this, and am glad I didn’t purchase more than 1 box.
Something’s definitely wrong with your setup, I use my plain old VCR to record The Price is Right daily.
I can record, but not in digital…only analog. I can get 3, but not 3.1
Hi! I have just one question for Oscar….What brand/model box did you get???? I’m hooked into regular cable and already I don’t get all the channels I ussed to get. I got my coupons and I was going to Best Buy for the boxes. I’d rather get ones I know someone’s already had sucess with than just any old one. Thanks! EgyptLyn
One thing folks mau not know or pay attention to (I didn’t) is that the coupons have an expiration date on them. I tried to do an appeal to see if I could another and was denied. So when you get yours check the bottom!
